LAST year we reported on the most highly cited recently published articles in the Journals of Gerontology Series A (1). In this article we will report on the most highly cited articles in the Journals over the last 3 years, i.e., from 2000 to 2002, as of June 30, 2003. First, however, we are happy to report a marked improvement in the Journals' impact factor to 3.455. This impact factor is higher than the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (3.092) and the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry (3.210). Two predominantly nonclinical gerontology journals, namely, Neurobiology of Aging (6.155) and Experimental Gerontology (3.535), had better impact factors than the Journals. In addition, the Journals had an immediacy index of 0.675, showing immediate relevance of the Journals to gerontologists and geriatricians.
From 2000, 29 articles were cited 15 or more times (Table 1). The most highly cited article was by Guralnik and colleagues (2) on lower extremity function and disability. The next most cited article was a review on sarcopenia by Roubenoff and Hughes (3). Seven of these articles involved exercise and muscle power.
From 2001, 28 articles were cited 10 or more times (Table 2). The most-cited articles were one by Fried and colleagues (4), which provided a scientific basis for defining frailty, and another by Kenny and colleagues (5) on the effects of testosterone replacement in older persons. That year, 14 highly cited articles involved nutrition focusing both on the ill effects of undernutrition and the positive effects of caloric restriction.
From 2002, 25 articles were cited 5 or more times (Table 3). The most cited of these were the review articles by Matsumoto (6) on the andropause and by Singh (7) on exercise. In addition, Kane's (8) provocative article on the concept that geriatricians' future lay in being chronic hospitalists was cited 14 times. Five of the articles focused on cardiovascular disease. These articles heralded the article by Goodwin (9) in 2003, which set the table for a heated discussion on whether or not hypertension should be aggressively treated in older persons (1017).
While it is too early to see citations emerging for the 2003 articles, we are confident that a number of articles published this year will make a major impact. These include the review by Blazer on depression (18), 3 major articles on dementia (1921), the series of articles on mobility (2228), the series of articles on sarcopenia (2935), the article suggesting that testosterone therapy may prevent sarcopenia in males who have low-normal testosterone levels (36), and the important demonstration by Bhasin and colleagues (37) that testosterone causes stem cells to differentiate into satellite cells for muscles and inhibits differentiation into adipocytes.
Among the most-cited articles in other gerontology journals was the citation superstar by Akiyama and colleagues (38) in the Neurobiology of Aging on inflammation and Alzheimer's disease. This was cited 266 times. Schnitzer and colleagues' article in Aging: Clinical and Experimental Research on once-a-week alendronate use was cited 80 times (39) and Masoro's article on caloric restriction in Experimental Gerontology was cited 79 times (40). The article on falls guidelines published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in 2001 has already been cited 40 times (41). Table 4 lists articles in other gerontology journals from 2000 that were cited 40 or more times (3840,4245).
Finally, it should be noted that the ISI Web of Knowledge (http://isi4.isiknowledge.com/portal.cgi) has published its list of the most cited scientists of the final 20 years of the last century. This list included 19 gerontologistsJ. L. Avorn, D. G. Blazer, H. J. Cohen, J. Cohen-Mansfield, B. E. Fries, J. S. Goodwin, J. M. Guralnik, A. M. Jette, R. L. Kane, M. P. Lawton, K. S. Markides, E. J. Masoro, V. Mor, J. E. Morley, J. G. Ouslander, M. Folstein, L. Z. Rubenstein, R. Schulz, M. E. Tinetti, and F. D. Wolinsky. The majority of these highly cited scientists publish regularly in the Journals (4670), two have been editors of Series A of the Journals (Masoro and Morley), and one was editor of Series B: Social Sciences (Wolinsky).
